    • ABB ACQ810: Sleep and boost function

    • Built within ABB's ACQ810 variable-speed drive is a sleep and boost function. This function detects pressure drops in the pipes and runs the pump to boost it prior to shut down. Pumping restarts when the pressure falls below the minimum level. This function extends the pump's sleep time and helps save energy. Also the lifetime of the pump and motor increase when non-productive running time is avoided.
    • ABB ACQ810 - Flow calculation

    • Flow calculation is a built in feature of ABB industiral drive modules. It is used to determine the flow rate within a process and can be used as part of a comprehensive flow metering regime. The feature can be used to detect leakage at a given point within your pipe network, helping to give a better overall picture of performance.
    • ABB ACQ810 - Level control

    • Prevents sediment build-up by randomly varying the surface level within a preset range. Using ABB drives' level control, tank and pipes can be kept clean using a "flush effect" which rapidly pumps water through the tank and pipes.Level control eliminates the need for a control valve, bypassing piping and the subsequent energy losses. The level of the water tank can be controlled using PI control to maintain smooth but accurate level control with one or several pumps running in parallel.
    • ABB ACQ810 - Anti-jam routine

    • Over time pump impellers used in waste water applications can become clogged or ragged, lowering pump efficiency. This can cause the pump to jam completely. ABB anti-jam routine runs the pump back and forward rapidly to clean the impeller, preventing build-up of solids on the pump.
    • ABB ACQ810 - Multi-pump control

    • Multi-pump control is a built in feature of ABB industrial drives. It is used to control flow rate within pumps running in parallel and helps to reduce energy costs.Within certain pump applications, additional head or flow rate capacity is needed at certain times to deal with large fluid volumes. Increasing the size of the pump within these situations is not cost effective because the pump is then vastly oversized and inefficient during normal flow requirements.
    • Leixlip Water Treatment Works saves €500,000 a year with ABB drives

    • Leixlip Water Treatment Plant is saving over €500,000 a year on its pumping costs thanks to the installation of ABB variable speed drives. The Leixlip Water Treatment Works in Co. Kildare is the second largest water treatment facility in Ireland. With a capacity of 175,000 m3 a day, it supplies over 30 percent of the drinking water requirements of the Greater Dublin Region, serving Fingal, Kildare and the northern part of Dublin City.
    • Carbon Reduction - WWT Round Table

    • Supply chain needs "more pull" on carbon"More pull" is needed from water utilities if they are to make the most of their supply chain partners, says a leading pump manufacturer. The view was expressed at a recent Round Table event on "Carbon footprint reduction in wastewater networks," hosted by Water & Wastewater Treatment magazine.Clive Patten, managing director of pump manufacturer ABS Wastewater Technology, sponsor of the event, surprised some water company representatives when he said that they were failing to get the best out of companies like his."We don't get a lot of pull from the industry on innovation, we have to very much come and push and sometimes that 'push' is very difficult."Participating in the event, Ben Roche, Yorkshire Water's asset strategy manager, said it was "amazing" that some utilities were failing to engage with the manufacturers on energy efficiency.Stephen Bird, operations director at South West Water, said he thought it was often a "perception" that water companies were not innovative, but added, "if there are procurement issues, blockers, processes that seem to get in the way, then obviously we are all interested to know how we can overcome those."The debate took place in London on 31 March 2011 and was chaired by Professor Tom Stephenson of Cranfield University. Representatives from Thames Water, Anglian Water, Welsh Water and Severn Trent also took part.Other topics under discussion included sewer abuse, customer behaviour, flow monitoring, urban drainage and private sewer transfer. The Round Table was organised by WWT magazine in partnership with ABS.
