FOG (fats, oils and grease) compounds in sewers bring water companies a lot of issues including blockages, odours and flooding. Methods of prevention and cure are multi-faceted and include chemical and mechanical technical solutions as well as educational approaches to stop customers abusing the network in the first place and the need for better policy and standards. The benefits of clearing the FOG include: lower sewer maintenance costs, reduced customer bills, but also lower carbon footprint from reduced operational activity. FOG can even be reused as a biofuel source.
Water & Wastewater Treatment (WWT) magazine has launched a campaign to help the industry better communicate, both internally and externally, with the aim of clearing FOG from sewer networks. The launch of this microsite is part of this effort.
